Insurance bills will increase costs

I urge lawmakers to oppose Senate Bill 329 and House Bill 4681, given their potentially detrimental impact on insurance affordability in our state. The bills would create new demands on insurance companies for how they process and pay claims and allow policyholders to seek damages for the total cost of an insurer's bad faith dealings, including the cost of litigation, giving profit-driven trial attorneys a way to exploit the system, likely inundating the courts and insurance industry with lawsuits.

Ultimately, increased administrative, legal, and regulatory costs for insurance companies would fall upon policyholders. Small businesses across the state are already feeling the pain of increasing costs. How are more costs going to help anyone? Michigan's businesses require stability and support as we navigate economic recovery. Lawmakers must prioritize the state's economic well-being by rejecting these bills. John Pastor, Livonia
